When One Partner Is Unsure About Couples Therapy

You may want couples therapy while your partner feels unsure. That difference can be frustrating, especially when you already feel distant. It can also be easy to hear uncertainty as rejection. Before treating it as a final answer, you can make room for what each of you understands about therapy.

Uncertainty Can Have Different Meanings

Your partner may have questions about privacy, cost, how conversations work, or whether their perspective will be heard. You might have some of those questions too. Avoid assuming you already know the reason for hesitation. You can ask about the concern itself without trying to prove that the concern is unreasonable.

Separate an Invitation From Pressure

You can explain why you are interested in support using your own experience. Wanting more connection is different from telling your partner they need to be fixed. An invitation leaves room for questions and choice. Repeating the request during every argument can make it harder to talk about therapy apart from the conflict.

A Consultation Can Be a Question

You can suggest asking about the process before deciding on sessions. Jazmine offers a free 15-minute consultation by phone. You can bring questions about couples work, fees, and her approach. A consultation does not promise agreement between you or mean you have to make a decision before the conversation begins.

Your Own Concerns Still Matter

You may want individual support even if you are not considering couples sessions together right now. Individual therapy can include relationship patterns, attachment, identity, and intimacy. It is not a way to speak for your partner or make their choices for them. You can discuss what you are carrying and what you need for yourself. Your questions can include boundaries, connection, and the choices you want to understand, without asking therapy to decide for someone else.

If You Want to Talk

This guide is not a substitute for therapy. You can bring these questions to Jazmine without having a finished explanation.
