Getting Started With Therapy

What Happens in a First Couples Therapy Session

You might wonder whether you need to prepare a speech, explain your entire relationship, or agree on what is wrong before a first session. You do not need a polished account. You can bring the concerns that made you consider therapy, including the parts you understand differently from your partner.

Start With What Brings You Here

You may want to talk about recurring conflict, distance, affection, or a change in your lives. It is okay if your partner names something else first. A first conversation can begin with what each of you wants help understanding. You do not have to cover every concern in a single meeting.

You Can Have Different Accounts

You may remember an argument differently or disagree about when distance began. Those differences can be part of what you discuss, rather than something to settle beforehand. Try not to treat the session as a case you have to win. Your experience matters alongside the meaning your partner gives to theirs.

Ask About the Way of Working

You can ask how Jazmine approaches conflict, attachment, or intimacy. She works warmly and collaboratively, drawing on EFT, the Gottman Method, and attachment-based therapy. No exact session sequence is promised here. Asking questions about her approach can help you consider whether you want to continue the conversation with her together.

Leave Room for Unfinished Thoughts

You may find words slowly or think of something after the conversation ends. A first session does not require a complete explanation of everything you have experienced together. You can say when a topic is hard to describe. The pace and focus of therapy are things to discuss, not a deadline you have to meet. You can bring a question about what happens next, including how to continue a topic that still feels unfinished.

If You Want to Talk

This guide is not a substitute for therapy. You can bring these questions to Jazmine without having a finished explanation.

Sessions are 50 minutes by secure video, with you located in Maryland. Private pay is $200 per session. Couples therapy is private pay only. Superbills are available for out-of-network benefits.
