Couples and Relationships
When You Feel Like Roommates Instead of Partners
You may handle the practical parts of life together while feeling far apart. Conversations become updates, and affection can feel like another thing to arrange. Calling yourselves roommates might describe that distance, but it does not explain all of it. You can talk about closeness without assuming you both miss the same things.

Name the Kind of Connection You Miss
You might miss being curious about each other, physical affection, shared time, or conversations that are not about responsibilities. Your partner may name something different. Being specific gives you something to discuss beyond the word disconnected. It also leaves room for forms of closeness that matter to you without making one version the standard.
Consider What Takes Up the Room
Stress, burnout, and life transitions can sit alongside relationship concerns. This does not mean they explain everything or make distance inevitable. You can discuss what each person is carrying and how practical demands affect the time you share. The conversation can include responsibilities without reducing your relationship to a list of tasks.
Affection Does Not Have to Be Assumed
You may want to discuss touch or intimacy but worry your partner will hear criticism. Speaking about your own wishes can leave more room than guessing theirs. Differences in desire or comfort are topics to talk about with care. Neither person has to agree to affection they do not want in order to show concern.
You Can Ask for Relational Support
Couples therapy can include attachment, communication, intimacy, and exploring sexuality. Jazmine’s approach is collaborative and LGBTQIA+-affirming. You can discuss the distance you feel, what partnership means to each of you, and what you want help understanding. Therapy does not offer a promised return to an earlier version of your relationship or a prescribed outcome.
