Getting Started With Therapy

What Is a Superbill?

You may hear the word superbill when asking about private-pay therapy. In general, a superbill is an itemized document describing services that you can submit to an insurer when requesting reimbursement through out-of-network benefits. Having the document does not mean reimbursement is available. That depends on your plan and the insurer’s review of your request.

A Document Is Different From Payment

A superbill records information about services; it is not itself a reimbursement or a promise from an insurer. Jazmine makes superbills available for out-of-network benefits. You can ask your insurer whether your plan includes those benefits and what it requires. Avoid treating the availability of a superbill as confirmation that some or all of a session fee will come back to you.

Ask Your Insurer About Requirements

Plans can have different requirements for out-of-network requests. Ask your insurer what documentation it needs and how to submit it before depending on reimbursement. You can also ask what information it reviews. This guide does not establish your eligibility or tell you an amount you will receive. The answer needs to come from the details of your own plan.

Consider What Information You Share

A superbill contains information about the services provided. If you have questions about what appears on the document, ask Jazmine before requesting one. You can ask your insurer about the information it needs as well. Understanding the document and its purpose matters alongside payment questions. This page does not supply a form, submission instructions, or a list of fields for your insurer.

Keep the Payment Paths Distinct

Private pay is available for every service with Jazmine. Individual and teen therapy also have an insurance path through Headway. Couples and family therapy are private pay only. A superbill for out-of-network benefits is different from the Headway insurance path. You can ask which payment option applies to the service you want without assuming these arrangements are interchangeable.

If You Want to Talk

This guide is not a substitute for therapy. You can bring these questions to Jazmine without having a finished explanation.
