What Is Systemic Therapy?

You may be wondering why a therapist would ask about relationships when the concern feels personal. A systemic approach considers you within the connections and environments around you. It does not mean every difficulty is someone else’s fault. It means your feelings can be discussed alongside the context in which you live and relate.

You Do Not Live in Isolation

You can bring the expectations, responsibilities, and relationships that surround a concern. A change in one part of life may affect another, but a guide cannot tell you how those connections work for you. The point is to leave room for context rather than treating every feeling as something you should manage entirely by yourself.

Patterns Can Happen Between People

A repeated disagreement may involve how people respond to each other, not just the words one person uses. Family roles and unspoken expectations can also be part of a conversation. You can talk about these patterns without reducing a person to a role or deciding one person is responsible for everything that happens between you.

You Can Keep Your Own Perspective

Considering relationships does not mean losing sight of your experience or excusing something that hurts. You can discuss your needs alongside what others expect. Different accounts can remain different. A systemic lens is a way to make room for those connections, not a requirement to agree with everyone or involve every person in therapy.

This Can Be Part of Individual Work

Jazmine holds a systemic approach across individual, couples, family, and teen therapy. Family Systems is one of the approaches she draws on. You can discuss relationships and environment even when you attend individual sessions. Families with teen or adult children can also consider family therapy. No particular session format or outcome is promised by this description.

If You Want to Talk
